After Casey dispatched his competitor, he went into the bathroom and grabbed the first aid kit so he could tend to the cut on his forehead. It was a deep wound that wouldn’t stop bleeding and probably needed stitches, but he didn’t have that luxury at the moment so he’d just have to make do with what he had. He cleaned it off the best he could and put a white bandage on it, which seemed to suffice for the time being. He left the bathroom and walked quickly to the door as he tried to figure out his next move. Then he thought about the man in the kitchen again. Maybe he had something on him that would give Casey a lead as to where his family was.

As he walked back to the kitchen, he also thought about Buster. He thought it was strange that he was nowhere to be found. If Valone’s men had taken his family, he thought it unlikely that they would take the dog too. In reality, if Valone’s men had been there, Casey figured it was more likely that he would have found Buster’s body somewhere in the house. Buster was a good watchdog and wary of strangers. He would’ve sensed something wasn’t right if Valone’s men were there. And he wouldn’t have taken it well if the family had been snatched against their will. He would’ve attacked the strangers. And it was likely that Valone’s men would have retaliated or defended themselves by killing the dog. Casey didn’t think they’d just take the dog with them. Maybe the fact that Buster’s body was nowhere was actually a good sign that Kate and the kids weren’t in the danger that he assumed them to be.

Casey walked into the kitchen and knelt down beside the dead man and started rifling through his pockets. He found the man’s cell phone and took it out of his pocket and laid it down on the floor as he continued his search. Casey then pushed the man on his side as he checked his back pockets and found the man’s wallet before putting him onto his back again. He opened it up and saw that he had about a hundred dollars in cash, which Casey took just in case he needed it for something. He looked at the man’s license and credit cards, though nothing was out of the ordinary.

Casey grabbed the phone and stood back up as he started looking through it. He scrolled through the phone numbers that he both called and received, though he didn’t recognize any of the numbers except for one. The one he did recognize was the one that he knew was Valone’s. It was the number that called when Casey talked to him back at the shopping center. He checked to see if there were any voicemails but everything had been deleted. The man still had five open text message conversations going, one of which was to Valone. Casey scrolled through each
