After Casey dispatched his competitor, he went into the bathroom and grabbed the first aid kit so he could tend to the cut on his forehead. It was a deep wound that wouldnât stop bleeding and probably needed stitches, but he didnât have that luxury at the moment so heâd just have to make do with what he had. He cleaned it off the best he could and put a white bandage on it, which seemed to suffice for the time being. He left the bathroom and walked quickly to the door as he tried to figure out his next move. Then he thought about the man in the kitchen again. Maybe he had something on him that would give Casey a lead as to where his family was.
As he walked back to the kitchen, he also thought about Buster. He thought it was strange that he was nowhere to be found. If Valoneâs men had taken his family, he thought it unlikely that they would take the dog too. In reality, if Valoneâs men had been there, Casey figured it was more likely that he would have found Busterâs body somewhere in the house. Buster was a good watchdog and wary of strangers. He wouldâve sensed something wasnât right if Valoneâs men were there. And he wouldnât have taken it well if the family had been snatched against their will. He wouldâve attacked the strangers. And it was likely that Valoneâs men would have retaliated or defended themselves by killing the dog. Casey didnât think theyâd just take the dog with them. Maybe the fact that Busterâs body was nowhere was actually a good sign that Kate and the kids werenât in the danger that he assumed them to be.
Casey walked into the kitchen and knelt down beside the dead man and started rifling through his pockets. He found the manâs cell phone and took it out of his pocket and laid it down on the floor as he continued his search. Casey then pushed the man on his side as he checked his back pockets and found the manâs wallet before putting him onto his back again. He opened it up and saw that he had about a hundred dollars in cash, which Casey took just in case he needed it for something. He looked at the manâs license and credit cards, though nothing was out of the ordinary.
Casey grabbed the phone and stood back up as he started looking through it. He scrolled through the phone numbers that he both called and received, though he didnât recognize any of the numbers except for one. The one he did recognize was the one that he knew was Valoneâs. It was the number that called when Casey talked to him back at the shopping center. He checked to see if there were any voicemails but everything had been deleted. The man still had five open text message conversations going, one of which was to Valone. Casey scrolled through each
